Things

The thing about things is that they change. Nothing, that is no thing, remains the same. When things are going well, expect a change for the worse. And when things are going badly, expect a change for the better, eventually. This is the distillation of all the wisdom I've gained in my more than sixty years here on earth hanging with the humans.

Perhaps it's like that awful truth Leonard Cohen says you can't reveal to the ears of youth -- except to say it isn't worth a dime. Perhaps it's something everyone of us has to learn the hard way. Things happen, and there's really not a thing we can do about it. Sometimes, it's just one damn thing after another. Sometimes things fall apart. Some things last; some things don't.

So here's to things: sure things, strange things, your things, my things, and all those crazy things we accumulate along the way, you know, the things we just have to get rid of eventually so we can get ready for the next big thing. But, hey, ain't that just the way things are?

All true. And don't forget: The more things change, the more they stay the same. Although, in this case, I guess that's something of a non sequitur.
